Happy Belated Birthday My Love!

15 Dec 1937 - 16 June 2006

Johnny Daniel Balu - My late-grandfather.

the greatest man i have ever had. He had the warmest heart of all. He took care of us since we were babies when our parents got divorced. That's why we called him Pa. Since he was a policeman, mom said he was a very strict and fierce father to them when they were kids. But he treated us differently, he was a very caring and loving grandfather to us. He never scold us nor beat us. He was kind not to us but to other people too. that's why everyone in Tamparuli likes him. There's a saying, said a real man never enter his daughter's room. that's my Pa. He never enter our rooms even if there's important things he want to say or give. He will call us and sit in the living room, waiting for us to see him.

After his pension as a policeman, he worked as a businessman, selling salted fish & dried shrimps in pasar Tamparuli. Selling salted fish is not easy. yes they are more expensive than the fresh fishes. but you have to endure the smell of em. i remember once when both of us were in a mini van (pawong) to go home. all people in the van were capping their nose. my chinese schoolmates said "iyer, zhe ge lao ren hen chou leh!" meaning "this old man is very smelly" & doing the "bluekkkkkk" sound. i was like WTF? why r u saying my grandpa like that? i nearly cried hearing them saying him like that. my grandpa innocently looked at them & gave them a wide smile, then he looked at me, "kawan sikul kau?" sigh. Napa la dia ni bagus sangat? people were teasing him but he still can give them a smile.

He always give us whatever we want. If we want to buy new clothes, shoes, books etc, he will give us lots of money. Usually a middle level family will have 3 dishes for dinner, lauk daging, sayur, sup & nasi. We are middle level family, but our dinner have 6 - 8 dishes every night! chicken, beef, fish, prawns, soup, veges, eggs, everything in a single dinner. desserts excluded. we had bugger, pisang goreng, chakui, sausage buns & many more! my grandma didn't like it & she said "urang kaya pun x makan malam macam kamurang!" but my grandpa said "biar rumah sederhana, yang penting makan cukup." & ended it with a smile. :)

but sadly he had become ill around April 2006. He has gout. actually after i graduated from STPM, i have been offered to UPM, but i reject it as no one will take care of my grandpa. my grandma took over his business. so i was the only one that available. unfortunately, his disease worsened day by day. at first he still can walk, but when his swollen feet getting bigger, he had to use the wheelchair or just laying on the bed. i took care of him day & night. i feed him & even bathe him. if i want to bath him, i would ask my uncles to carry & sit him to the chair, because my grandpa was very big & chubby like santa claus. but day after day, i myself can carry him already. as he had lost so much weight & he's lighter than me. the first time i bathe him, he cried. i asked him why, i thought maybe the water was cold or too hot, but he said "bapa malu kau kasi mandi bapa...." with my teary eyes i said "buat apa mau malu, kalo mau malu, tiada orang dpt kasi mandi ko pa..nanti ko berbau.." T_T

on 16 May 2006, it was my birthday. while massaging him, i said to him, "pa, hari ni birthday sa." he looked at me & said "sorry lat...bapa xdapat bagi kau hadiah..." sigh. i said "pa..sa bukan mau minta hadiah harijadi..sa just mau bapa sihat cepat2.." but he didn't get any better. he was critically ill. he once said to me how he felt sorry for me, if not because of him, i would have been in UPM already. he always blame himself for that. but to me, taking care of him was the least thing i can do for him, compare to what he had done for me since i was a little girl. he used to tell me how important education is. his last wish for me is that i will further my studies to the highest level.

a month after my birthday, he was weaker than before. he refused to eat & drink for a week. he closed his eyes but he's not asleep. all his nails were black. his skin was bloodless pale. all i can hear was his light & weak breath. that evening, me, my aunts & grandma gather around him. we chatted & laughed while lightly massaging my grandpa's hands & legs. suddenly he coughed and then he was like breathing harder. we called him so many times but he didn't respond at all. Suddenly he had stopped breathing. T_T my uncle bring him to hospital, believed that my grandpa was still alive. we were anxiously waiting for the news at home. my uncle called me & said "lat...bapa tiada sudah..." T_T i cried but still wishing that it was a joke from my uncle, as he is a joker in the family. but sadly it was true.

my grandpa's gone. he had left me. forever. how could you do this to me pa??

it's been more than 5 years now. i have never visit your grave. only once; the day you were buried. i am very sorry. but i still don't have the courage to visit you. i still can't accept the fact that you were gone. but i promise you, i'll visit your grave in 1 fine day..

2 days ago was your birthday. happy belated birthday pa! i know you are doing great up there..

May Your Soul Rest In Peace.

loving & missing you,
your grand daughter.

the beginning of the adulthood.

May 16, 1985 - May 16, 2011

my kindergarten school was in SRJK (cSt. Phillip Tamparuli.
I was a very smart & lovable kid.
All my Chinese friends and teachers thought I am Chinese since I have sepet eyes, fair skin and thin hair.
They spoke Mandarin with me, didn't understand anything, I could only nod and shake my head
There I met my good friend, Emilly Francesca Raphael, a very naughty girl
We both always get involved with dance and many stage performances.
My late grandfather would give me RM1 (gold coins), but I only want 80 cents (1 x 50 cents,cents 1x20, 1x10 cents) = 3 coins.
Macam banyak kan?

I was in form 4 where I was very active in taekwando (blue) and MIRC (nickname: [tHyRa^ ^]).
I had the greatest nickname in those dayshaha.
Thyra means "God". I didn't mean to be the God. but the name seems like a very girly and attractive.
So I had to stop Taekwando cause I was asked to focus on SPM
I was also one of the famous girl in school (Spice Girls Tamparuli kunu. *wink*).
A big fan of Britney Spears, N' sync, Spice Girls & Backstreet Boys.
Me & my group always join the 'Talent Time' & singing competition, organized by the English Club.
Me & my BFF. Priscilla Edwin @ Jude, often called to Puan Rafidah's room (the discipline teacher); our pinafore TIDAK MELEBIHI LUTUT. sexy kunu. buhh~
Pakai hotpants p kedai Tamparuli pun next day in school kena panggil la sudah p bilik Pn. Rafidah.
" cikgu nampak kamu p kemarin d kedai. pakai seluar pendek. " (-_-")

Now, I am 26 years old. wooot wooooott ...!! Berkulit kuning langsat, thicker hair but eyes still sepet. (-_-) Masa ni if my late-grandpa bagi RM1, saya ambil dan demand for more than RM1, daripada kena bagi 80 sen kan? Oh, not only I can speak in Mandarin with my chinese friends, incim & ah pak., I also can write & read it. x lagi mcm dulu masa tadika. :DI have been friends with Emilly until now, where she has 2 lovely sons. While I am single but not available. I am still a big fan of Britney Spears even though she is not that famous like she used toNVM the age, I still look beautiful and young. itu lah, makan la jamu (Mustika Ratu) untuk awet muda! :8)
I feel blithesome having a very great family & friends & also a boyfriend that is merely a very understanding, gentle & always make me laugh. love 'em much! Thank God for all the blessings.

birthday's eve

I'M PROUD OF MY KAMPUNG :)

The History of Mount Kinabalu Climbing

Today’s relatively comfortable two-day climb to the peak is a far cry from the travails of the early explorers.  In 1851, Sir Hugh Low, then the Colonial Secretary for the British crown colony ofLabuan, credited as the first person to climb the mountain, took nine days to reach the summit plateau, traveling in a group of 42 people.

Sambatang Cave – the first camping site of Sir Hugh Low,  the first person to climb Mt. Kinabalu which is through Kampung Kiau Taburi.  The first lady to climb Mt. Kinabalu, Lilian Gibbs, was also through the same trail.

General Information About Kampung Kiau Taburi, Kota Belud

Kiau Taburi is a small kampong (village) at the foot of Mt. Kinabalu in the district of Kota Belud, Sabah,Malaysia.  The natural beauty of the area which is still preserved with the scenic beauty of Mt.Kinabalu makes it a tourist attraction.  Kiau Taburi is about 56km from the town of Kota Belud.  At 900 metre above sea level, one can take the route toRanau and after passing through Pekan Nabalu, a signboard will show/direct  the route to Kampung Kiau.  Kampung Kiau encompass 3 other villages, i.e., Kampung Kiau Taburi, Kiau Nuluh and Kiau Bersatu.

The Origin of Kiau Taburi

One of the popular story of how the name of Kiau came to be is about a group of tobacco seller from the sarayo (an ethnic group in Sabah).  Once upon a time, the entire state of Sabah and possibly the whole world, suffered a severe drought.  It got worse as the day passes.  Rivers big and small dried up.  Everyone worked hard to search for water but failed.  It happened that a group of tobacco sellers passed by the village.  As they stopped to rest, one of the seller heard the sound of the “ kologiau “ bird several times.  The group went off in search of the bird.

After a while, one of the seller came upon a “kologiau “ taking it’s bath at a water spring.  The tobacco seller immediately drank the water.  He then went off to tell the other members of his group.  All of them drank from the spring.  The finding of the water delighted the group as it was a very bad drought they were facing.  They shouted “ Noiyau! (full, in the Dusun language), noiyahaukoiyau”, which meant full.  They named the river “ Koiyau ”, which in Dusun meant “ fulfilling ” and after the “Kologiau ” which made the “ Kiau” sound and also for helping them find the water spring.  The news about the spring spread throughout the villages.    Possibly the villagers settled in Kiau because of the existence of the spring.

Taburi in Malay means trumpet/horn.  In the days before the arrival of the British to Sabah (thenBorneo), the villages were at war with one another. The village of Kiau was also involved in the war.  It was very fortunate that the villagers of Kiau were united and had strong and brave warriors and not easily attacked.  Furthermore they lived in longhouses.  When the warriors returned from war, they pass through Bukit Perhentian (Resting Hill), located near the Kiau Taburi monument, and blows the taburi (or horn) as a sign of victory to the villagers of Kampung Kiau.

As soon as they hear the sound of the taburi, the villagers will go out and welcome home their warriors…

The Dusuns who are Christians is one of the largest community staying at Kampung Kiau Taburi whilst the rest are Muslims from other races.  The villagers still practice their traditional custom and language inherited from the ancestors in their daily life.

A majority of the villagers of Kampung Kiau Taburi are farmers.  Although they have permanent jobs, the villagers continues to carry out farming activities, especially during the weekend.  They do this to earn extra income for their families.   For those who has no proper jobs, farming is their main source of income.

Ginger and vegetables are the main agricultural activity and also paddy.
Paddy planting is also carried out the traditional way to ensure the various types of paddy planted do not become extinct or disappear with time.  The type of paddy planted are hill paddy.  The types of paddy planted are TombugSarayoTadongSilou andRohuman which was also planted by their ancestors and has become a heritage.  These types of paddy are suitable to be planted in hilly areas, although some has tried to plant on ordinary paddy fields.  The farmers in Kampung Kiau Taburi plant their paddy in hilly areas as their village is located in such areas.  They also plant organic vegetables which is of high quality.  The vegetables will be sent to sellers in Pekan Nabalu or individual sellers will come to the village to buy the vegetables in bulk.
Pineapple planting is also a popular type of farming in Kampung Kiau Taburi and is still being carried out today.   Almost all the villagers here owns and carries out pineapple planting.  This can be seen as soon as one enter into kampong Kiau Taburi. Pineapple is planted by the roadside for the ease of the growers to bring out their produce.
